Learn how scope, essential requirements, technical documentation, notified bodies and production control fit together under the GAR.
Which products fall under the GAR?
The Regulation covers appliances burning gaseous fuels for cooking, cooling, air-conditioning, heating, hot-water production, lighting or washing, and certain fittings.
Check definitions and exclusions carefully. Industrial products used in specific processes and products covered by other specific rules may be treated differently.
Essential requirements and operating conditions
Annex I covers safe design and construction, materials, ignition, combustion, gas leakage, temperatures, energy use and instructions. Assessment must reflect gas families, supply pressures and intended installation conditions.
Record assumptions about installation, ventilation, dispersal of combustion products and maintenance and keep the instructions consistent with them.
What belongs in the technical documentation?
Annex III requires documentation that enables the design, manufacture, operation and conformity to be assessed.
General description and identification of the appliance or fitting
Design and manufacturing drawings, diagrams and explanations
Risk analysis and applicable essential requirements
Harmonised standards or justified alternative solutions
Calculations, examinations and test results
Installation, use and maintenance instructions
Certificates and reports from the conformity procedure
What is the role of a notified body?
For series production, the GAR generally combines EU-type examination with a module supervising the production phase. A different procedure, such as unit verification, may suit single units or small batches.
Select the procedure under Article 14 and retain certificates, assessments and production controls with the correct product model and revision.
Declaration, CE marking and dossier control
After successful conformity assessment, the manufacturer issues the EU Declaration of Conformity and affixes CE marking and the notified body identification where required. Documentation and declaration are generally retained for ten years.
Certification and assessment by the required notified body remain separate obligations under the selected conformity procedure.
How DME-CE supports the Gas Appliances Regulation
The questionnaire in DME-CE helps determine whether the product is an appliance or fitting within the scope of the GAR and identifies the relevant essential requirements. The team can therefore build the assessment during design.
For each product model and revision, requirements connect to risks, drawings, gas families and supply pressures, calculations, tests, and installation, use and maintenance instructions. Certificates and reports from the notified body can also be recorded against the correct procedure and product version.
DME-CE structures the dossier and keeps its justification traceable, but does not act as a notified body or issue a GAR certificate. The manufacturer remains responsible for the correct procedure and conformity.
